Knott Rigg and Ard Crags

A short and fairly easy walk up Knott Rigg and Ard Crags, managing to avoid the crowds of nearby Buttermere! Starting from the top of the Newlands Pass, after only a short but steep climb we soon had excellent views of the surrounding fells and of Moss Force.

Beda Fell

A gentle stroll up Beda Fell making the most of some fine weather.  Starting from the 'new' church in Martindale (built in 1880) and walking past the 'old' church  (16th century) we zig-zagged up to the Beda Fell Ridge with great views to Hallin Fell and Ullswater.

Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag

A circular walk from Grasmere taking in 4 Wainwrights and some great views over Thirlmere, a reservoir now at record low levels which is responsible for the upcoming hosepipe ban in Cumbria and surrounding areas.

Skelton Show

With an attendance of 10,000 this is the largest village show in the North of England and a showcase for all that is good about the countryside.  The amazing weather continues ensuring a good turnout.

Helvellyn via Striding and Swirral Edge

A great time to climb Helvellyn given the recent period of settled weather.  Quite a bit of scrambling along the ridge itself and it took longer than expected given the numerous water breaks required!  Also took in Birkhouse Moor and Catstye Cam on the way up/down.

Silver How

A quick trip up Silver How before the bad weather arrives.  Great views from the top overlooking Grasmere village and The Langdales with a decent number of Herdwicks to cheer us on!

Appleby Horse Fair

The horse fair in Appleby attracts up to 30,000 visitors, 10,000 of which are Gypsies and Travellers who use it as an annual get together and it is often billed as the largest Gypsy Fair in Europe.  With scorching hot weather we decided to travel there by train instead of battling with queues of traffic … Continue reading Appleby Horse Fair →

The Magnificent Seven

Given the combination of a fantastic weather forecast and the bank holiday weekend, we decided to explore the Eastern most part of the Lake District which is often neglected by tourists.  Yesterday was spent around the shores of Haweswater, a reservoir created to serve Manchester back in the 1930's which involved flooding the village of … Continue reading The Magnificent Seven →

Festival of Light

The Festival of Light started with 'Blencathra by Moonlight' in 2015 to help raise money for the Nepal Earthquake.  It was a meeting of friends and families from both Keswick and further afield that went for a walk up Blencathra with head torches on.  It proved to be such a success at both raising money … Continue reading Festival of Light →

Castle Crag

Having climbed Castle Crag from the North a few years ago, we decided to try the opposite direction starting from Rossthwaite - apparently named from the Old Norse meaning 'clearing in the rose thorns'.  Beautifully situated in Borrowdale this is a short walk which takes in a path through a slate pile towards the top … Continue reading Castle Crag →
