Having climbed Castle Crag from the North a few years ago, we decided to try the opposite direction starting from Rossthwaite – apparently named from the Old Norse meaning ‘clearing in the rose thorns’. Beautifully situated in Borrowdale this is a short walk which takes in a path through a slate pile towards the top which is no doubt quite slippery in wet weather. Views over Borrowdale were spectacular as well as across to Derwent Water from the very top. And lots of new born lambs in all the fields that we passed, including the Herdwicks – the most hardy sheep in the Lake District.
