After the visit to Aira Force last week we returned today with some more time which allowed us to climb up to Gowbarrow Fell. Parking at the National Trust car park and following the well marked path past the falls, a path heads up to Gowbarrow which (today) was extremely boggy and slippery. The views … Continue reading Gowbarrow Fell

Aira Force
A beautiful, almost Spring like morning, so we took a short walk up to Aira Force, probably the best known waterfall in the Lake District. A small stone footbridge crosses the top of the falls where you can look directly down the 70 foot drop. The network of well marked paths, trails, bridges probably warrant … Continue reading Aira Force
Snowfall
Woke up this morning to a decent dump of snow. Very picturesque but driving conditions were difficult which meant we were restricted to a walk straight from the house.
Great Mell Fell
Parking at the small parking place close to Brownrigg Farm (room for approx. 3 cars), a well defined path headed around an area of woodland and past a National Trust sign. The path then headed up towards the top through areas that look like they are usually quite boggy although today everything was frozen with … Continue reading Great Mell Fell
Deer in the Mist
Not the nicest of weather but we headed up Martindale on the south side of Ullswater, starting from the church at the foot of Hallin Fell. Along the ridge at Steel Knotts we managed to get a glimpse through the mist of Ullswater itself along with a small group of deer.
Catbells
A beautiful clear day to walk up Catbells. After a short, steep climb up a well defined path we were soon rewarded with views across Derwentwater to Skiddaw and Blencathra.
High Rigg
The quickest route up to High Rigg is from the church at St John's-in-the-Vale but a much nicer route starts from Legburthwaite where a full traverse of the ridge can be done. Walking from south to north we managed to reach the top just before the weather turned so were rewarded with views to the … Continue reading High Rigg
Little Mell Fell
A New Years Day walk up Little Mell Fell and not surprisingly we weren't the only ones who thought it would be a good idea to blow away the cobwebs before the bad weather came in. A short, but quite steep walk, directly from a parking place close to Hause Head and views of Ullswater … Continue reading Little Mell Fell
