March normally heralds the start of Spring but someone has forgot to tell the weather Gods that. With treacherous conditions on some of the roads this isn't the time for venturing too far and after a short walk up the lane it became clear that even with an improving weather forecast, it will take some … Continue reading Springtime?

The Beast from the East arrives in the West
After a period of summer-like weather, winter has returned to the Lake District. Although the forecasts indicated that it would be the eastern side of the country that would be hit, the 'Beast from the East' has also left its mark on the west. Given that temperatures are likely to remain sub-zero for the next … Continue reading The Beast from the East arrives in the West
A Day in the Yorkshire Dales
Today we headed south to meet up with some friends for a day in the Yorkshire Dales. This is an area full of stone-built villages set in beautiful scenery including the dramatic landscape in and around Malham. Parking at the pay and display in Stainforth we did a circular walk which took in Stainforth Falls as … Continue reading A Day in the Yorkshire Dales
Steel Knotts, Wether Hill, Loadpot Hill, Arthurs Pike and Bonscale Pike

Low Fell and Fellbarrow
The summer-like weather continues so we headed West and, parking at Thackthwaite, headed up Low Fell and Fellbarrow. Beautiful views from the former which almost felt we were back in Norway. The view from the top of Fellbarrow was less dramatic but with clear views out to sea.
Black Fell
The fine weather continues so we made a return trip towards Coniston and, starting from one of the National Trust car parks close to Tarn Hows, we headed up to the Tarn itself and on to Black Fell. Beautiful sunshine at the top, and with no wind it felt almost summer-like with views across to … Continue reading Black Fell
Holme Fell
A sunny but cold afternoon and a trip up Holme Fell, starting from Yew Tree Tarn. Walking through an area of mature pine trees at the head of the Tarn we joined a well marked path up to the top which wasn't long but was quite steep in places. Lovely views down to Coniston Water … Continue reading Holme Fell
Gowbarrow Fell
After the visit to Aira Force last week we returned today with some more time which allowed us to climb up to Gowbarrow Fell. Parking at the National Trust car park and following the well marked path past the falls, a path heads up to Gowbarrow which (today) was extremely boggy and slippery. The views … Continue reading Gowbarrow Fell
Aira Force
A beautiful, almost Spring like morning, so we took a short walk up to Aira Force, probably the best known waterfall in the Lake District. A small stone footbridge crosses the top of the falls where you can look directly down the 70 foot drop. The network of well marked paths, trails, bridges probably warrant … Continue reading Aira Force
Snowfall
Woke up this morning to a decent dump of snow. Very picturesque but driving conditions were difficult which meant we were restricted to a walk straight from the house.
